THE TASK
Asia Development and Production teams at Adidas approached the Avery Dennison's Footwear team with the idea of creating a next level woven shoe to showcase all of Avery's footwear capabilities using the Ace 15.1. A boot with high profile athlete sponsorships and a wide customer base, this challenge came with high technical priorities.
MY ROLE:
PERFORMANCE UPPER MATERIAL
• research
• creative direction and design
• technique innovation ideation and development
• materials and surface palette
• textile design and development
• sampling and prototyping
RESEARCH
My process begins with research to identify materials that improve performance. Understanding the physics of the sport, the personalities of the athlete(s) and the consumers allows me take the first pen to paper.
TECHNICAL PRIORITIES
I take direction and inspiration from the footwear design teams and begin fleshing them out with real world solutions. For some ideas there aren't any and that's where the true innovation begins.
MATERIAL AND SURFACE DIRECTION
WOVEN TEXTURE PALETTE
The ideal kit of parts consisting of both existing and theoretical woven techniques, contrast and balance between large and small scale, multi level dimension and diversity. In this case the entire upper was cross woven with TPU, placed in hot mold, activating the toe area, forming a protective shell.
